For 60 years Killeshandra was home to one of the world's greatest missionary endeavours.
Young women left Killeshandra to bring education, health care and, most important of all, the Christian message to the African peoples. Through their courage, their total commitment, their dedication, they have made an enormous contribution to the development of many third world countries. The full extent of this contribution may never be fully appreciated or recognised. For these brave women, their journey began in Killeshandra. They were members of the Missionary Sisters of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary, and their convent, the mother house of the order, was situated a few miles outside of the town. At its peak the order was the largest missionary congregation for women in Ireland. Throughout the length and breadth of Ireland the sisters were simply and affectionately known as the 'Killeshandra nuns'. To tell their story is to tell the story of some of the bravest and most dedicated women ever to leave these shores.
The original convent, the old Drummully House was established by Arthur Lough who formed the Drummully Farm and Garden Society. At a meeting held on the tennis-courts of the house on 3 September 1896 it was decided that this co-operative would widen its scope to include agricultural and dairy interests and thus was born the Drummully Co-operative Agricultural and Dairy Society Ltd. This meeting was attended by 1,500 people. In 1898 Killeshandra would replace Drummully in the title of the co-operative. Killeshandra emerged within a few years as the largest and most successful co-operative society in Ireland.
As the Dairy expanded, Drummully House was sold to the sisters in 1924.
The convent buildings were extended twice during the first twenty-five years.
Part of the convent was opened as a retreat and conference centre in 1976, however the number of vocations continued to decline and eventually the convent was abandoned in 1985.
